Cervical Cancer and HPV

This year in the U.S., the American Cancer Society estimates over 14,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and over 4,200 women will die. Recent data shows that for every 100,000 women, eight new cervical cancer cases were reported and two people died of this cancer (U.S. Cancer Statistics Working Group, 2021). Cervical cancer is highly curable when found early.

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a known cause of cervical cancer. HPV vaccines can prevent two known cervical cancer-causing strains of HPV when administered before exposure. HPV vaccination could prevent more than 90% of cancers caused by HPV—an estimated 33,000 cases every year—from ever developing (CDC, 2020).
